In 2024, consumption of centrifuges increased by 52% to 575K units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a significant increase. Over the period under review, consumption hit record highs in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2022, the amount of centrifuges produced in Japan totaled 47K units, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum volume at 56K units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, centrifuges production reached $112M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 22%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $133M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Centrifuges imports into Japan soared to 582K units in 2024, surging by 47% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2023 when imports increased by 2,069% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, centrifuges imports shrank to $39M in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $50M. From 2015 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (312K units), Mexico (195K units) and the UK (26K units) were the main suppliers of centrifuges imports to Japan, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +215.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($13M), the United States ($8.5M) and Germany ($5.6M) appeared to be the largest centrifuges suppliers to Japan, with a combined 69% share of total imports. The UK, Mexico, Taiwan (Chinese) and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.7%.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +74.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, the average centrifuges import price amounted to $66 per unit, falling by -35.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price faced a precipitous contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3.9 thousand per unit. From 2018 to 2024, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($639 per unit), while the price for Mexico ($4.3 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (-8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Centrifuges exports from Japan fell significantly to 7K units in 2024, reducing by -63.6% against 2023 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 with an increase of 279% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 19K units, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, centrifuges exports fell rapidly to $54M in 2024. In general, exports saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $88M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (3.3K units) was the main destination for centrifuges exports from Japan, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, centrifuges exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (631 units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (567 units), with an 8.1% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+3.7% per year) and Germany (+11.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($24M) remains the key foreign market for centrifuges exports from Japan, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($4.9M), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.1% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value to China totaled +3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-5.8% per year) and Germany (+3.3% per year).

In 2024, the average centrifuges export price amounted to $7.6 thousand per unit, increasing by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $17 thousand per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($12 thousand per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($6.1 thousand per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
